The Role of Education

The role of education is particularly important, especially in Uganda. The Decade for the Eradication of Poverty has confirmed that education assists children to break the cycle of ignorance and poverty, to find their passion, discover their voices, gain self-confidence, and realize their place in the world. Education replaces an empty mind with an open one and prepares an individual for an adult life. At M-Lisada our primary objective is to secure a formal education for all of our vulnerable children.

Schools in Uganda

Uganda had three different standards of schools—First Class, Second Class, and Third Class. As expected the quality and cost of the schools varies greatly, depending on the class. Many of our children are in Third Class schools, but the goal is to get as many of them as possible into Second Class schools.

In both primary and secondary schools each academic term is three to four months long. An academic year consists of three terms. Classes run from Monday to Friday, although some students attend on Saturdays as well.

Vocational Schools

The Ugandan economy needs trained workers to sustain and expand its industries, and contribute to economic growth as a whole. This is a prime requirement for the reduction of poverty, and the hope of a better future.

Unfortunately there are not enough appropriate opportunities for youth to learn a vocation. Private institutions like M-Lisada are important providers of vocational skills in the fields of music, arts and crafts, mechanics, and farming. We are also working to create an internship program in the business community for our teens.

Evaluation and Monitoring Program

M-Lisada has a well-planned strategy of involvement. The M-Lisada staff makes frequent school visits, for the purposes of monitoring and evaluating children's class performance, their conduct, participation in extracurricular activities, and listening to assessments by the class teachers.

Sponsoring a Child

To sponsor a child for one year, each school requires that the following items be paid:

  • School fees, scholastic materials, meals, and extra lessons are paid three times a year, prior to the beginning of each term.
  • School uniform costs and educational trip fees are paid twice yearly.
  • Some schools are not within walking distance from M-Lisada, and a student incurs transportation fees, paid along with tuition.
