If you own an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and need to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), you can donate to any 501(C)(3) charity directly through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Most IRA owners in their seventies are eligible to make this type of donation, and because the money goes directly from your IRA account to one or more charities, it is an extremely tax efficient method of donating financial resources to causes and endeavors you support. 

Recently, a donor was moved to sponsor the education of one of our resident children. She wanted to sponsor the child, but is on a fixed income and didn’t think she would be able to. After talking with her, we figured out that even though she was on a fixed income, she could make a donation to M-LISADA through a Fidelity Giving Account.

A Fidelity Giving Account is an example of a Donor Advised Fund. A DAF can be opened through most major investment institutions and mutual fund companies. It is a great option for people who are moved to donate to charities but don’t have a big enough investment portfolio to have a private foundation. With a DAF, you get the same tax benefits of a private foundation, and the institution handles nearly all the paperwork and tax details. You can donate to any qualifying 501(C)(3) charities you wish to for as long as you would like.
