Bridge Education Program
M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program is a one–year program that gives vulnerable children the opportunity to learn the skills and behavior they need to transition successfully into school. Most of the children who join this program have never had any type of formal education, and would struggle to adapt to the behavioral demands and learning skills that are required to succeed in school. The children have spent their time in the Katwe slum where they have learned unhealthy habits that make it difficult for them to go to school without first attending M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program.
Every Monday through Saturday, 45 community children aged 6-12 come to M-LISADA’s Kampala home, from Katwe and other surrounding areas. At M-LISADA they learn how to read in our library, learn life skills, are educated about basic health and hygiene, learn cultural dances and join M-LISADA’s Community Brass Band. The children are also given behavior modification classes, food, and basic health services. After completing M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program, M-LISADA tries to find sponsorship for the children to enroll into school.
Reading to the Rescue
Reading to the Rescue is a main component of M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program. Every morning the children spend two hours doing various reading related activities. These activities include listening to stories, reading aloud together, storytelling where children create their own stories, and playing games that are centered around creativity and teamwork.
Many children who live in the communities surrounding M-LISADA don’t know how to read or have access to books. The local schools often don’t have libraries. Reading to the Rescue promotes and develops reading in the community. M-LISADA has a mobile library that visits different schools in the surrounding area and several schools come to M-LISADA to use their library. M-LISADA’s library is open to all community people who want to read and borrow books from the library. There are also community events with spelling and reading competitions that promote reading.
At the end of M-LISADA’s one-year Reading to the Rescue program many of the children in M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program have learned how to read and to speak confidently in public.
Vocational Skills Development
In addition to school-based education, M-LISADA also has a vocational skills development program that gives children the opportunity to develop significant life skills that they will need for employment. It is built on the conviction that every child is naturally gifted and it is the work of M-LISADA to restore their confidence by helping them identify and develop their potential. Vocational skills development courses and trainings take place both onsite at M-LISADA’s home, and off-site at other training facilities.
Vocational skills development classes have included training and certified courses in tailoring and fashion with Fabric of Life, computer skills, animation, book making, soap making, plumbing, mechanics, welding, and hotel management.
Educational Outreach
In addition to the children who live at M-LISADA’s home and board at M-LISADA Passion Primary School, M-LISADA sponsors the education of children who are detained at Kampiringisa Rehabilitation Centre or live on Kalangala island.
