Our Kids
Our children are beautiful, strong, and resilient. Their early difficult experiences have made them quick learners who are talented, resourceful, creative, and passionate. Under our care they learn to play brass instruments, perform cultural dances, and take part in acrobatics. They engage in educational and athletic pursuits. Because M-LISADA gives unconditional support to our children, they, in return, are generous and believe in giving back. They share everything they have and teach other kids in the surrounding community what they have learned. They are so much more than the unimaginable challenges and circumstances they’ve faced, endured, and overcome. Our children work hard, have big dreams and long to get an education. Brimming with potential, our children give us hope. They become community leaders who believe in team work. They are brothers, sisters, role models and mentors. We, at M-LISADA, are so proud of their accomplishments. M-LISADA works with several groups of vulnerable children and young adults.
The largest of these groups live in Kampala and Kalangala, at M-LISADA’s Children’s Homes and Resource Centers. These children are orphans, refugees, street children, children who were living in extreme poverty and children who were abandoned or abused. Most of the children who are brought to M-LISADA will live with us until they turn 17. During their residency M-LISADA works to reunite lost and abandoned children with their families.
M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program (BEP) is a daily program for children, aged 6-14, who live on the streets or in the Katwe slums. Some of the children who come to M-LISADA are refugees, isolated in the community because of a language barrier. We enroll them in BEP and give them an opportunity to play and learn music together with other children. Eventually they learn to speak English and the local language and are better prepared to enroll in school. It is only because of M-LISADA’s support, that these children have any type of formal education.
A small but growing group of children and young adults, aged 6-21, have their education and board sponsored by M-LISADA in Bombo. M-LISADA’s Passion Primary Boarding School is especially designed for children that come from complex and insecure backgrounds. This is often where children who live at M-LISADA and those that finish M-LISADA’s Bridge Education Program go to primary school. The education that these children receive is outstanding and prepares them well for further schooling. Once they graduate from primary school, M-LISADA continues to support their education up to and including a university degree. Your sponsorships are what make this possible. For more information, see SPONSORSHIP.
The children and parents who are part of M-LISADA’s Psycho-Social and Community Empowerment programs make up one of our most fragile groups. The children and young adults in these programs have records of abuse, and the majority of them live in extreme poverty. Their families are surviving day to day and the children often work to help support their family. M-LISADA has community programs that work with and support parents. We also work with the youth and young adults who have been in conflict with the law at Kampiringisa Juvenile Detention and Rehabilitation Center. M-LISADA’s goal is to educate and empower this group, and to give them the tools to navigate and improve their insecure lives.
